Reinforced concrete: what is decided before the first pour

Bar positioning, cover, propping and cleanliness of the formwork: the checks that determine a structure's quality all happen before the concrete arrives.

Once the mixer truck is empty, there is very little left to correct. Insufficient cover, a displaced bar, inadequate propping: within hours all of it becomes a settled fact that must either be accepted or demolished. That is why the quality of a reinforced concrete structure is decided almost entirely in the hours before the pour, not during it.

The pour is not when the structure is made. It is when the decisions already taken are set in place.

Cover is the steel's first protection

Cover is the thickness of concrete between the reinforcement and the surface. It is not there for appearance: it is what protects the steel from carbonation and from chlorides. Insufficient cover is invisible at handover; it shows up ten years later as spalling and rust staining that traces the line of the bars.

Spacers must therefore be in place, in sufficient number, and matched to the structure's exposure. Near the coast, where the air carries chlorides, the required thickness is greater than for an interior building. It is a check that takes a few minutes and governs how long the structure lasts.

What is inspected before a pour is authorised

  • Bar position and size, checked against the reinforcement drawing
  • Actual cover, with spacers in place and suited to the exposure
  • Laps and anchorages at the specified lengths
  • Propping and bracing of the formwork, able to take the pressure of fresh concrete
  • Cleanliness of the form base: no sawdust, no tying wire, no standing water
  • Openings, sleeves and starter bars in place beforehand rather than after

There is nothing original about this list, and that is exactly what makes it useful. It is worked through the same way at every pour, recorded, and signed. A check that depends on how alert someone happens to be that day is not a check.

Curing, often neglected

Concrete does not gain strength because it dries, but because it hydrates. Drying too quickly interrupts that reaction and leaves a material more porous, more cracked and less durable than the calculation assumed. In high heat the surface can lose its water within hours.

Curing — watering, sheeting, curing compound — is therefore not an optional end-of-day precaution. It is the last stage of the pour, and on a summer site it needs an arrangement decided in advance: who waters, how often, for how many days.

Test cubes only tell you afterwards

Taking cubes and crushing them at seven and twenty-eight days remains essential: it establishes that the strength class ordered was actually delivered. But it says nothing about cover, nothing about bar positioning, nothing about curing. It verifies the material, not the structure.

This is why serious execution control never reduces to test certificates. What actually protects the structure is the few minutes spent inside the formwork before the concrete arrives.
